In this article, we will discuss how to backup your WordPress site to Google Drive using Softaculous. For this, you will need to configure your Google Drive as a backup location in Softaculous, and then create a backup of your WordPress site.
Configure your Google Drive as a backup location in Softaculous
You’ll need to add Softaculous as a backup location before you can create a backup on your Google Drive. To do so you can follow the steps below.
- Login to your cPanel of your site.
- Find the Softaculous icon and click on that icon to go to the Softaculous page.
- In the icon section at the top right, you can find the Backup and Restore icon click on it, and once the page loads, click the Manage Backup Locations button.

- Now click on the Add Backup location button and you will be redirected to the page where you can add your Google Drive as a backup location.
- Add a descriptive name to the Location Name field for your Google drive backup location. Your Google Drive location will be visible to you in the backup locations list on the Edit Settings page by this name.
- Select the Google Drive protocol from the Protocol list box.
- In the Backup Location (optional) field you can add the folder you want to backup in Google Drive. e.g. / backup . The field is blank by default, and your backups will be created in the ‘Softaculous Auto Installer‘ folder on your Google Drive.
- After filling the above fields, click on the Add Backup Location button.
- Then you will be redirected to the Google authorization page. Sign in to your Google account with your username and password.
- You will be prompted with the tab ‘softaculous.com needs to access your Google Account’, click Allow
- Once the authorization process is complete, you will be redirected back to Softaculous. If everything worked well, you will see a ‘Backup Location added successfully’ message.
Create your WordPress backup to the Google drive location
After you have finished configuring the Google Drive location, you can configure automatic backups that occur at specified intervals as well as manual backups i.e. timed backups through the Google Drive location.
Configure automated backups to Google Drive for your installation
- Login to cPanel
- Look for the Softaculous icon and click on that icon to go to the Softaculous page.
- In the top-right icon section, you can find All Installations icons. Click on the icon and all your installations will appear on this page.
- Find the installation you want to backup and click on the Edit icon; the Edit Installation Details page will appear.
- On the Edit installation details page, select the Google Drive location you created earlier in the Backup location dropdown.
- Next, in the Automatic Backup drop-down, select the frequency you want to create backups. e.g. Daily, weekly and monthly backups. You can also set custom frequencies so your backups will be created accordingly.
- In the last field Backup rotation, select the number of backups you wish to be available at any given time. e.g. If you set this to 2, your old backup will be deleted after 2 successful backups.
- Click the Save Installation Details button. This will set up an automatic backup of your WordPress site via Google Drive.
Create a manual backup of your Site to Google Drive
- Login to cPanel
- Look for the Softaculous icon and click on that icon to go to the Softaculous page.
- In the top-right icon section, you can find All Installations icons. Click on the icon and all your installations will appear on this page.
- Look for the installation that you want to backup and click on the Backup icon, the Backing Up WordPress page will appear.
- In the Backup location, drop down and select the Google Drive backup location you added earlier.
- Now click the Backup Installation button. That’s it, this will start the backup process of your WordPress site to your Google Drive in the background. You will be notified by email once the backup is complete.
You have now configured Softaculous to Backup WordPress site to Google Drive.
